ACCRA YOUTH SINFONIETTA 2021 INFORMATION:

Rehearsals:
In line with Covid precautions, full-orchestra rehearsals are currently on hold. We are, however, offering individual and small group tuition and performance opportunities.
If you would like to be involved in AYS in 2021 please call or email us. We look forward to seeing you!
New partnerships:
We are extremely grateful to students and parents from the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, California, who are providing excellent online tuition for our established players and have funded a shipment of instruments and other equipment to Ghana. A huge thank you!

We welcome new students from the SOS Children's Village in Tema and thank the staff and management for their support for the program. Please visit our gallery to see video clips of recent performances by these students. You will not believe how well they are progressing!

And that is in no small thanks to their wonderful, talented tutors! Thank you RSQ String Quartet members for your dedication to our new musicians. You are an inspiration.

Guest conductor:
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we have had to postpone the May 2020 visit of guest conductor, Xavier Cloete. We look forward to being able to reschedule this opportunity.

Xavier Cloete has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Stellenbosch with specialisation in both solo bassoon performance and orchestral conducting. He lectures in Orchestral Conducting Studies at the University of Free State in South Africa, and held the position of Resident Conductor and Artistic Director of the Odeion School of Music Camerata Orchestra until 2018. During 2017 and 2018, Xavier lead the OSM Camerata to international success, winning the Ictus International Music Competition hosted in Philadelphia, U.S.A. Xavier has won several prestigious conducting competitions and been invited to conduct in Finland, the US and the UK.

ABOUT AYS
AYS is an inclusive ensemble that draws together children in the Greater Accra region who play a classical instrument. There are currently around 40 members, including musicians from the SOS Children's Village in Tema as well as children from local and international schools in Accra.
The musicians are currently rehearsing independently and in small groups in line with Covid precautions.

We are grateful to students from the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra in California for providing online tuition to our established players and to members of the RSQ Quartet for tutoring our budding new SOS musicians.
"The hope for this orchestra is to give an avenue and inspiration for young Ghanaians to get involved in classical music"
H.E. Andrew Barnes - Australian High Commissioner to Ghana
